Newton Blades is a contemporary artist, known for his 'borrowed' and 'reimagined' artworks. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Blades' aesthetic is wide and varied, encompassing the old and the new through innovative interactions with found art. 'Waldo' depicts an eighteenth century portrait, distorted almost beyond recognition. Three sitters pose in a pastoral scene, surrounded by leafy trees and rolling fields. Blades has worked into the painting, blurring and transposing sections to create a faceless and fragmented totality. The result is haunting, the original image remaining only as a spectral trace, abstracted to unsettling but beautiful effect.
